Lore Deighan

ARTIST BIO

Lore Deighan is a painter and art teacher in Floyd, VA.  She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Painting and Printmaking in 2006. Highly influenced by her natural surroundings, after graduation instead of applying to graduate school, Lore took off to travel around the United States immersing herself in the vast and varying landscapes of our beautiful country. While working on organic farms, and backpacking though many national parks, Lore continued to make art throughout this journey. The places she explored influenced her work deeply, as her landscape pallet expanded. After travelling and working on farms for over a year, Lore and her partner landed back in the Appalachian Mountains ready to start a family. Lore, her partner of 22 years, and their two children have been nestled in Floyd VA now for sixteen years. In 2015 Lore began painting in her downtown art studio, Blind Cat Studio, alongside fellow artist and teacher Aven Tanner. Together, the two host annual open studio events where they show and sell their work. Lore also exhibits her work around the town of Floyd in various businesses and has participated in many group shows at the Floyd Center for the Arts. Lore has been a part time elementary art teacher at Blue Mountain School, a progressive alternative school in Floyd VA for fourteen years, inspiring the youth of her community in creating art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a process painter exploring landscape through color, form, light, and shadow.  I never begin a piece with the end product in sight; each painting is a journey of discovery and insight.  I layer paint and then scrape and sand it down, discovering avenues of structure and form through this process of creation and destruction. I often contemplate our impact on the land and its impact on us through painting, and the physical process in which I do so explores this relationship between destruction and creation.

I have been told many times by people who have purchased my art that they discover infinite new perspectives and images within a single piece over time.

Selected Exhibitions

After sixteen years of living in Floyd VA displaying my art in my local studio, all over town in various businesses, and participating in many exhibits at The Floyd Center for the Arts, I decided it was time to make this website. My art has been very well received in our small community, and I have sold many paintings to people from around the world straight off the walls our local coffee shop, restaurants, Under the Sun Floyd Tattoo shop, and The Floyd Center for the Arts. With that said, I did not spend time and energy compiling dates, awards, and exhibits that I have participated in throughout these years, and it makes my head spin thinking about trying to conjure up all of that information. Therefore, this list begins only with the inception of this website.
